About 11% of families in the UK with children are step-families – children or young people living with adults who are not their parents, for some or all of the time.
Step-families can work very well, but they can also have extra challenges.
- You have to find ways of coping with step-parents, and perhaps step-brothers or sisters.
- You may have to move to a new place and follow different family rules.
- Your parent may behave differently with their new partner and you might find that uncomfortable.
Don’t be surprised if you find some things hard.
There is some very useful help on living in a step-family on the Childline website here.
Childline also have message boards which you might find helpful; sometimes it’s good to know that it’s not just you.
