Many people are daunted by sewing machines but they do allow you to take on some very exciting projects.
If you have a sewing machine, take some time to get to know it. Read the manual, learn to thread it properly, and practise sewing in a straight line on different scraps of fabric until you feel confident. Don’t be scared of your sewing machine and do this calmly and quietly at your own pace.
You may find a beginners’ sewing machine or class or workshop in your local area; or you can do an online course with Tilly and the Buttons.
If you don’t already have a sewing machine, you might want to start with something simple and cheap that won’t completely overwhelm you. John Lewis has a cheap and cheerful mini machine which can cope with simple fabrics and lightweight fabrics. It also has a useful sewing machines buyers’ guide if you want something a bit more serious.
