Basic sewing skills – machine

Many people are daunted by sewing machines but they do allow you to take on some very exciting projects.

If you have a sewing machine, take some time to get to know it. Read the manual, learn to thread it properly, and practise sewing in a straight line on different scraps of fabric until you feel confident. Don’t be scared of your sewing machine and do this calmly and quietly at your own pace.

You may find a beginners’ sewing machine or class or workshop in your local area; or you can do an online course with Tilly and the Buttons.

If you don’t already have a sewing machine, you might want to start with something simple and cheap that won’t completely overwhelm you. The cheapest basic machine currently costs about £50.00. If you don’t have a sewing supplies shop near you, a good place is to start your research is this useful sewing machines buyers’ guide from John Lewis.
