If you want to explore abroad without working or volunteering, think about:
- staying with friends or family who live abroad. Perhaps you can stay with someone you met on an exchange visit. You can plan your own travel to get there
- going on a cheap package holiday with your friends. Check the age restrictions – Club 18-30 allows you to travel without an adult if you’re 17 or above, though bookings must be made through an adult.
- planning your own independent trip – alone or with family or friends. This is a good option in safer or more familiar countries. Read our basic suggestions here, and make sure you’re up-to-date on Foreign Office travel advice for your destination
- going on an organised adventure trip. This can be an easier and safer way of travelling to more challenging destinations around the world. Good companies for adventurous travel include Exodus, Dragoman and Contiki. Generally you will have to be at least 18 for these trips
You can help to pay for the cost of these trips by doing some part-time work in the UK.
